Review of the Waxed Canvas Watch Strap by Substation Ltd.

Most watch straps look their best the day they come out of the box. They are pristine, flawless, and perfectly uniform. But a Substation Ltd. strap only starts the journey on day one. I have spent a full year wearing a custom piece Matt made for me from Filson x Nigel Cabourn collaboration waxed canvas, and the results are stunning.

Full review

I know, I know! Here I am talking about TGN again. If you have followed any of my recent reviews, you have probably noticed a recurring theme: I spend a ridiculous amount of time in The Grey NATO Slack channel (easily one of the best corners of the internet for anyone obsessed with watches and gear). It was there that I first connected with Matt Lutton, the maker behind Substation Ltd. While I’m used to seeing makers working with various leathers, I was surprised to see that Matt was specializing in waxed canvas.

The concept of a strap made from the same material as a field jacket or a duffle bag was an immediate hook. I knew right away that I had to have one in the rotation. Spoiler alert: it is amazing.

Before the full review, here are some tech specs:

These are the specs and the configuration I have selected. I love this Filson & Nigel Cabourn collaboration surplus material. But I've been bitten by the waxed canvas bug and would like to get a strap in other colors, aging levels, and textures.

One thing worth mentioning. I am not sure if a tapered configuration is even possible, so be aware that you are probably limited to a strap that keeps a uniform width on both the lug side and the buckle side.

So talk to Matt, see what he has, and pick your favorite material and strap style.

Company and ordering

Ordering process was... refreshingly personal. When I was ready I reached out to Substation directly through an Instagram DM, which began a collaborative process where Matt walked me through his current archive of materials.

I really like this way of commissioning custom straps. There are some brands that offer a complex form on their website where they ask me to select leather type, lining, stitch type, thread color, dimensions, tapering... WTF? I don't know what half of those things are, and I definitely don't know what the end result would look like. Leaving the expert to take the lead, as I did with Matt, is way better.

During our initial exchange, he gave me guidance on which materials were currently available, and set the expected lead time for the commission. In the end, I was surprised by the efficiency of the entire operation. From the moment we finalized the design to the strap arriving at my door, the process took less than three weeks. This timeframe is pretty fast for bespoke gear, especially considering that shipping was included in that window.

By the way, Matt’s attention to detail goes way beyond the strap. You can tell the moment the parcel hits your doorstep. The branding, from the logo and typography to the specific color palette, is very well done. This level of graphic design you don't always see from independent makers, and it makes the whole unboxing experience feel special. Subtle, but geeky and very cool.

Design and Materials

The heart of this strap is the fabric. The Filson x Nigel Cabourn collaboration products are kinda legendary in the workwear enthusiast community. And Matt managed to source a bit of surplus material. Unlike standard canvas, this material has a tactical weight to it. When I look at the strap the first thing I notice is how the weave is incredibly tight.

When I handle the fabric I can feel the wax saturation. It’s not just a surface coating. I think that the wax is driven into the fibers.

As I mentioned before the strap does not taper. Matt opted for double folded laminated construction. That means that two layers of canvas are neatly glued together. There is no visible stitching anywhere on the strap.

There is one wide canvas keeper that is fixed. I deliberately chosen the option not to have quick-release spring bars. I didn't want to have that small aperture (hole) where the bolt-action of a quick-release hardware is located, because I thought that might cause fraying over time.

Color, ah the color. At first it was uniform, rich olive. Something between desert and military olive. But in time it got a bit darker. I can see the patina. And now I think I understand it. Patina is not dirt, damage, or material deterioration, but simply the fabric reacting to me wearing the strap and to the external elements like rain and sun.

And not to forget, the buckle is signed brushed stainless steel one.

Comfort and Durability

Because this strap doesn't have a traditional leather underlining, the comfort is fantastic. Instead of the stiffness often found in layered straps, this canvas conforms naturally to the wrist. Actually, I would say it is almost sculptural. The wax saturation allows the material to be molded to the shape of your arm, much like a soft candle. The end result is a truly custom fit.

The distance between the holes is great, and luckily, I can get the perfect fit with ease.

Since the strap doesn't taper, this 22mm straight cut wears just a tiny bit large. On my wrist, I do notice a bit of "chunkiness" on the underside, which is something to keep in mind if you prefer a lower profile near the buckle.

The combination of a tight weave and the wax treatment keeps the construction clean and structural, even after a full year of heavy rotation.

I don't want to sound poetic or cliché, but here we go: waxed canvas doesn't just get old - it evolves.

Everywhere the strap bends or passes through the buckle, the wax shows up. I can see something like marbled lines.

Of course, a full year is a lot of time, and the strap has changed its color since day one, as I described in the previous section.

The color has also shifted from the original tone, taking on a more darker appearance.

The strap definitely ages. There are some dark areas and spots, and it has really become "mine".

When it comes to durability, it has been awesome. There are no frayed edges or any kind of damage. The tight weave and wax treatment keep the construction clean even after weeks of friction against jacket sleeves.

Initial Usage Strap looks very nice to the touch, feels premium and is well made. Putting in on I don't feel any stiffness around the lugs, and the strap curves and conforms nicely around my wrist.

Two months of use It is really easy to have it on, super enjoyable wearing experience. Also, I can really feel the weight of the waxed canvas. I wouldn’t describe the strap as "moist", but the better way to say is that it feels dense and saturated.

One year of use The strap definitely ages. There are some dark areas and spots, and it has really become "mine." Additionally, the material has developed a memory. When I take off the watch and lay the strap flat on the tabletop, it retains a curve. It’s no longer as flawless as it was on day one. The material has loosened a bit, but there are no tears or damage.

Compatibility and Pairing Recommendation

Thanks to the minimalist design and neutral matte color this strap pairs nicely with almost any watch, be it a diver, pilot, field watch, or chronograph. It has a casual appearance without drawing too much attention to itself.

During the last year I wore it on a polished-case chronograph, a brushed field watch, and a diver, and the combination looked great in every example. The material is sturdy enough to support larger, top-heavy watches that might flop around and change position if worn on thinner fabric or nylon two-piece straps.

But I have to admit, there are a few scenarios where it is not the best choice. You should probably avoid pairing this strap with ultra-thin dress watches or wearing it to super formal occasions. The aged, distressed nature of the canvas has an intentionally worn-out aesthetic that clashes with a polished tuxedo environment. Also, the non-tapered, straight-cut profile leans heavily into a casual look that just does not suit formal occasions. In my opinion, at least.

Price and Value

The price for a custom Substation Ltd. strap is $80, and in my opinion, it is a solid value. Here is my thought process: considering that I received a handmade, made-to-order product from the US crafted from iconic canvas, $80 feels more than fair.

If I compare it to similar products currently on the market, this strap hits the sweet spot. I have seen many other canvas options that carry a much higher price tag without offering the same level of material pedigree.

By the way, for this same $80 price point, many retailers featured on StrapHunter offer machine-made straps produced from standard canvas. These straps lack the density and the character of the highly saturated heritage waxed canvas.

Bringing It All Together

Growing up with a deep appreciation for the Pacific Northwest, I’ve always looked at brands like Filson, Eddie Bauer, and Danner as the gold standard for gear that lasts. I think that Matt has a vision for Substation Ltd. that fits right into that lineage. I hope he continues to work on his craft.

After a year of wear, I’ve been fully bitten by the waxed canvas bug. There is just no substitute for how this material looks and feels. RIP my wallet as I am looking into backpacks and jackets.

As for the strap? This is an awesome piece that tells a story about my 2025, and I can’t recommend the experience of breaking one in highly enough.
